Educational Attainment

Nearly 40 percent of the Sacramento area’s residents earned an associate’s degree or above and almost 30 percent possess at least a bachelor’s degree, as based on the 2006 American Community Survey. In terms of its population’s educational attainment, Sacramento places above the statewide and national averages, the Los Angeles area in California, and Indianapolis, Indiana and falls in line with the other areas.

Enrollment

Over 167,000 students are enrolled in community colleges or four-year universities in the Sacramento area—similar enrollment levels as seen in the San Francisco and Oakland metropolitan divisions and above levels in the Silicon Valley which has approximately 151,000 students enrolled in postsecondary educational institutions. Around 30,000 Sacramento area students each are enrolled at California State University, Sacramento and University of California, Davis, but the majority (nearly 98,000) are California Community College students.

Degrees Earned by Area of Study

As of the Academic Year 2005-2006, over 24,000 degrees were awarded in the Sacramento area—similar totals as seen in the Bay Area markets. The largest number of degree types for associate degrees and above, of those presented in the chart below, were awarded in business, management, and marketing (nearly 2,700), followed by engineering (close to 1,100), legal (around 600), and computer & information sciences (almost 600).
